Australia Scholarships Without IELTS: What Works in 2026

Australia scholarships without IELTS are far harder to find than many viral posts suggest. As of 6 October 2026, the flagship Australia Awards Scholarships still ask finalists for an English test result, and the 2027 application round has already closed. What does exist is a narrower set of routes: test alternatives, medium-of-instruction letters and university-level discounts. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is marketing.

The short answer: “fully funded” and “no IELTS” rarely go together

Search results for this topic often promise both. The official sources do not support that combination.

The Australia Awards Scholarships are the Australian Government’s main fully funded award for students from partner countries. According to Australia Awards Nepal, applicants must supply an IELTS, TOEFL or PTE certificate as proof of English proficiency. Australia Awards Africa’s 2027 country profile sets the bar at IELTS 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, for applicants whose first language is not English.

Requirements differ by country, though, and some programs build the test into the selection process rather than the application form.

How the Australia Awards handle English testing

The Australia Awards Vietnam site shows the most flexible model I found. For some employment groups, an English test result is optional at the application stage. If those candidates are shortlisted, they sit a DFAT-funded IELTS selection test and must reach IELTS Academic 5.0 with no sub-band below 4.5. Other employment groups must submit a score of IELTS 6.0 (no band under 5.5) when they apply.

Timor-Leste works differently again. According to Australia Awards Timor-Leste, applicants first take a Preliminary English Language Test. Those who pass the cut-off are shortlisted, and up to 90 candidates were invited to concurrent IELTS preparation from 29 May 2026.

In every program reviewed, an IELTS-equivalent result is still required before an award is confirmed. What changes is who pays and when you sit the test.

That is a real saving for applicants who cannot afford the exam fee. It is not the same as a scholarship with no English test.

Key dates: what is open and what has closed

Applications for the 2027 intake opened on 1 February 2026 and closed on 30 April 2026 at 14:00 AEST, according to Study Australia, the Australian Government’s international education site. Australia Awards Africa states that applications for the 2028 intake will open in February 2027.

One guide aimed at Pakistani applicants, published by Gradualin, says Pakistan’s 2028 round will cover Master’s study only. That claim comes from a third-party site, so confirm it with Australia Awards South Asia and Mongolia before planning around it.

Where English-test flexibility actually exists

The real flexibility sits at university level, not in the government awards. Three routes come up repeatedly.

1. Alternative tests such as the Duolingo English Test

Collegedunia reports that more than 90 Australian universities accept the Duolingo English Test (DET), with accepted scores ranging from 105 to 120. Cialfo cautions that acceptance varies by institution and even by programme within one university.

There is a catch. Study International reported that Australia’s Department of Home Affairs did not accept the DET for student visas when it published its coverage. Home Affairs updated its approved-test list in 2025, with a new instrument covering applications made on or after 7 August 2025, according to Migration Alliance. Check the current list before you pay for any test.

2. Prior study in English

The University of Canberra says applicants can show English proficiency through previous study in Australia or another English-speaking country, study at a recognised institution, or a test. Its FAQ page also says it awards more than 100 scholarships and bursaries each year.

A guide for Nepali students on NEB GPA Calculator claims that universities such as La Trobe, Canberra, Charles Darwin and Sunshine Coast generally accept more test options and sometimes a medium-of-instruction letter. It is a secondary source, so verify the claim on each university’s own page.

3. Pathway and English programs

Some universities offer routes for applicants just short of the score. The University of Canberra College runs English language programs for students holding conditional offers, including 10-week courses linked to ANU entry requirements, according to the university.

Partial scholarships you may see advertised

Many “scholarships” offered by universities are tuition discounts, not full funding. Adventus lists several University of Canberra awards worth 10% off tuition for the duration of a course. Uni Enrol lists a 30% fee waiver for students from Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

These can help, but they do not cover flights, living costs or health cover. Treat any page that calls such discounts “fully funded” with suspicion.

Student visa rules still apply

A scholarship does not replace the visa requirement. Australia’s Home Affairs requires English evidence for a subclass 500 student visa unless the applicant falls into an exempt class. According to a report republished by YEN.com.gh, exemptions include passport holders from certain English-speaking countries, and exempt applicants must still upload supporting documents. Officials can ask for proof of English at any point.

A practical plan for applicants

  1. Read your country’s Australia Awards page. Rules differ between Nepal, Vietnam, Timor-Leste, Africa and others.
  2. Check the scholarship handbook. DFAT’s Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook lists required documents and entitlements.
  3. Ask your target university in writing. Confirm which tests, waivers and medium-of-instruction letters it accepts for your specific course.
  4. Verify the visa test list. Do not assume a university-accepted test satisfies Home Affairs.
  5. Budget for IELTS anyway. A valid score keeps every option open, including 2028 Australia Awards.

Why it matters

Posts promising “fully funded, no IELTS” scholarships tend to drive applicants toward unofficial agents and paid “guaranteed” services. Australia Awards states on its Nepal site that it never charges fees at any stage, which is a useful test for any offer you meet.

The realistic path for 2027 and beyond is a combination: aim for the 2028 Australia Awards round opening in February 2027, prepare an English result early, and use university discounts or waivers where they genuinely apply. Anyone who needs to avoid IELTS entirely should expect partial funding at best.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a fully funded Australian scholarship without any English test?

Based on the official sources reviewed, no. Fully funded Australia Awards require an English result at some stage, though some programs fund the test.

Is the Duolingo English Test accepted?

By many universities, depending on the course. Student visa acceptance is a separate question that you should confirm with Home Affairs.

When do 2028 Australia Awards applications open?

Australia Awards Africa says February 2027. Other country offices usually follow a similar calendar, but check yours.
